Learn To Speak Spanish And Enrich Your Life

"You want to learn to speak Spanish, Mom?" My 12-year old girl asked me over breakfast the other day. I nodded and smiled at her. "But who will you speak Spanish with? There is no one that we know speaks Spanish." She's got a point there. When I was young, my first introduction to a foreign language, which was English, started in my kindergarten class. We sang nursery rhymes like Baa Baa Black Sheep, Hickory Dickory Dock, London Bridge, and many more. My favourite was Mary Had A Little Lamb. I used to imagine being Mary and running around with a pet lamb. But what really burnt into my memory was the picture of the cute snowy lamb from the book. In actual fact I have never seen a live lamb before. When I grew older and had my own kids, I came across on the television some very interesting telenovelas from Latin America like "Secreto De Amor" and "Betty Le Fea". All these telenovelas were in Spanish. I loved watching them, but having to rely on the not so perfect sub-titles somehow killed the fun. Worse still, there were times when the local tv station would dub the show into the national language. The drama and the 'fire' in the telenovelas just did not get ignited. I would rather watch them in Spanish even though I did not understand what they were saying. Anyway, that was where all the action and drama were, in the Spanish language itself.I wanted to learn Spanish so that I can enjoy the telenovelas better. So I went online, surfed the net and found some online courses. But learning a new language and having no one to talk to in Spanish made learning more difficult. Thus, I tried the fun way. I downloaded some Spanish songs plus their lyrics in Spanish and their translation in English. I then started to do a karaoke bit and thus made learning the language much more enjoyable. Hence, I initiated the slow but interesting road to learning to speak Spanish.7 reasons why you should learn Spanish:-1. So that we can enjoy the Spanish telenovelas which are often full of adventures and intrigues. Unless you know the language, you are always left hanging not knowing what was really happening most of the time.2. Be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking friends better and learn of their culture through the understanding of their mother tongue. You can make lifelong friends among Spanish-speaking communities. Having lifelong international friends not only opens future travel opportunities but makes you a cultural ambassador both at home and abroad.3. Learn Spanish to enhance your travelling experiences, especially if you going to Spanish-speaking countries. Local people are always excited if a traveller can speak to them in their own language.4. Knowing Spanish as a second language can improve your employment potential. Just having a basic knowledge can separate you from the crowd of applicants. This is especially true if you are applying to be nurses, social workers, teachers, salespeople, translators, and many more. Bilingual employees often receive a larger salary than their non-Spanish speaking counterparts.5. Many high schools, colleges and universities offer study abroad opportunities. If you choose a Spanish-speaking country, you would live, breathe and blend into the culture easily and come home with an appreciation of their day-to-day life. Learning Spanish also open up access to areas of "high" culture such as art, literature, and history.6. Learning Spanish makes acquiring the next foreign language easier. Once you know Spanish, other languages such as Italian, French, Portuguese, or even ancient Latin, will almost seem like "cousins" to the Spanish you have already learned.7. If you get to meet stars the likes of Gloria Estefan, Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, and Salma Hayak face-to-face you can get their attention by speaking fluent Spanish when asking for their autographs. You might even gain a celebrity friend!
